Hey, let’s all sing this: “I love you, you love me, we’re a happy family…”  Sorry, couldn’t help it, because this weekend is all about singing a brand new song!

Today we are finishing the series: “Brand New” and I truly hope you’ve been encouraged and inspired to see 2013 as a year that God wants and plans to do “something new” in your life and in GCC!  Ya’ll with me on this??

2013 Key Verse: Is. 43:19 “… For I am about to do something new!”

We’ve talked about God giving you new “roads” (destiny and direction) and new “rivers” (refreshment and resources) in 2013.  We’ve talked about how God wants to “brand” you new, in a new way!  We’ve looked at how God gives you “new mercy” every morning and how the ultimate blessing is the satisfaction of being a “road” and a “river” for others!

But there is one more very important “new something” that God wants to give you.  As a matter of fact, he wants to put it in your heart- A BRAND NEW SONG!  What’s your theme song for 2013 going to be?

As you know I’ve had to “break into” song the last two weeks and I may just need to make it three weeks in a row- especially since that’s what we’re talking about today!  I may have to break into a song right now…

Requests to sing, fan club… ** Lip-Sync a prerecorded Craig song that he is singing… “You are all I need. I am carried by Your grace Covered in Your mercy. Open up my eyes So I can see You clearly. Jesus I believe…”

Beyonce deal… Ok, obviously that wasn’t me, that was Craig singing and I was just lip syncing!  Some of you may be doing the same thing with your life!!  You’re not “singing” your “own” song, you’re lip-syncing someone else’s song, or the song others dictate, or you’re not even singing a song at all!

And you need a new song to sing- your “song”, the THEME for YOUR LIFE!  So, what “song” are you singing?  What’s the theme song for your life in 2013?

Have you ever watched a great movie where the music built the scenes as much as the action and secretly wished you had a soundtrack for your life?  Les Miserable… And I love the theme song to that movie!  Watch and Listen to this…

That song builds the scenes, captivates, rallies people to a cause worth living for and singing about!

You want to sing a brand new song because it can become the background song, the theme for living your life in a new way that inspires you, motivates you, challenges you…  Because you get to choose the song you will write!  Because God wants to inspire you with a brand new song in 2013!

Isaiah 44:21-23 21 “Pay attention, O Jacob, for you are my servant, O Israel.  I, the Lord, made you, and I will not forget you.  22 I have swept away your sins like a cloud.  I have scattered your offenses like the morning mist.  Oh, return to me, for I have paid the price to set you free.”  23 Sing, O heavens, for the Lord has done this wondrous thing.  Shout for joy, O depths of the earth!  Break into song, O mountains and forests and every tree!  For the Lord has redeemed Jacob and is glorified in Israel.

1. The Song You’ve Been Singing is Old and Outdated!

When I run I listen to and sing some old songs!  Do you have some “old” songs??  I’m usually playing some Boston to be honest!  But lately I’ve been saying that I need to get some new tunes.  Although the old rock songs still sound good, that’s just it, they’re old and they can represent a time in your life that is “past”- way past!

Every generation needs its own song to sing!  I love the OLD HYMNS, but… let this emerging generation write an sing their song for The Lord…

Oldies” may be “goodies” but they keep you locked into and living in an era gone past- more seriously your life can get out of tune!

KEY- Ever heard someone sing out of tune?  Jeff McGuey- “It’s My Desire to Live for Jesus!”  It’s my desire you don’t sing!

Man when your life gets out of tune with reality or the church gets out of tune with where the culture is and what God is doing about it; it’s absolutely awful!!  It’s painful!!

Still singing an old song, doing the same old thing, is a setup not merely for being irrelevant, but for being irreverent because it dismisses God’s capacity and creativity to “do something new” that is necessary!

Perhaps it’s time to sing something new that speaks about what God is doing NOW?

Psalm 96:1-3  “Sing a new song to the Lord!  Let the whole earth sing to the Lord!  2 Sing to the Lord; praise his name.  Each day proclaim the good news that he saves.  3 Publish his glorious deeds among the nations.  Tell everyone about the amazing things he does.”

2. The Song You’ve Been Singing is Depressing!

Depression is often the result of what you dwell on, but it doesn’t have to defeat or destroy you!  Some of the most depressing songs ever written are Country songs!!  Think about it…

Nothing But the Wheel” Patty Loveless- And forty-one goes on and on.  And the lights go winding in the dawn.  The sky’s the color now of polished steel.  And the only thing I know for sure.  Is if you don’t want me anymore.  Then I’m holding on to nothin’ but the wheel!

The Song Remembers When” Trisha Yearwood- I guess something must have happened.  And we must have said goodbye.  And my heart must have been broken.  Though I can’t recall just why.  The song remembers when!”

Mean” Taylor Swift- And I can see you years from now in a bar, talking over a football game.  With that same big loud opinion but nobody’s listening.  Washed up and ranting about the same old bitter things.  Drunk and grumbling on about how I can’t sing.  But all you are is mean.  All you are is mean and a liar and pathetic and alone in life.  And mean, and mean, and mean, and mean.  But someday I’ll be living in a big old city.  And all you’re ever gonna be is mean, yeah.  Someday, I’ll be big enough so you can’t hit me.  And all you’re ever gonna be is mean.  Why you gotta be so mean?

Quit singing what depresses you and start singing what blesses you!  God wants you to know that the past can be and is forgiven, that the pain can be healed, that the disappointment can disappear, that failure is not final!!  You can sing a brand new song!

3. A New Song Reflects a New Season for Your Life!

The new song may reflect where you’ve come from, but more importantly it speaks about where you’re going!   Where do you want to go with your life, family, business, where do we want to go as a church?  Start writing that song!

The new song reflects your hopes and your dreams; it celebrates all that would make you joyful!  Psalm 98:1 “Sing a new song to the Lord, for he has done wonderful deeds.”

The new song reflects what you believe by faith that God wants for your life– its all about the preferred future with a focus daily on living to see it fulfilled!

1979 High School BB team!  Our theme song??  “We Will Rock You!”  The result was an undefeated season and a state championship!!

What is your theme song- the brand new song you need to sing and set as the background for your life in 2013?  What is the New Song You Now Need to Sing, Shout, and Break Into in 2013 especially when you face the challenges that are sure to come?

Some practical steps: leave these on screen for you…

What may be out of tune in your life that needs to come into harmony with God’s purposes?

What is the “song” you can write for/with your life that speaks about the God-ordained new things you hope for, dream about, desire to experience?

Only you can write and sing your brand new song!  So write it down and sing it!

Psalm 19:14 “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.”
